Candied Oranges
Sweet, tangy, and perfectly glossy — these homemade candied oranges make a delightful snack or a beautiful garnish for desserts.
About the Recipe
These glistening slices of orange sunshine are a treat on their own or as a stunning topping for cakes, tarts, and puddings. With their chewy texture and citrusy sweetness, they’re as pretty as they are delicious — and surprisingly easy to make at home!
Ingredients
Oranges – 2
Water – approx 4 cups
Caster sugar – 2 cups
Instructions
- Slice the oranges to approx 1/8 inch thick. Don’t make them too thin or too thick.
- In a saucepan, add 2 cups of water and the orange slices and bring to a boil. Simmer for 2–4 minutes, then remove the slices and put them in ice-cold water.
- In the same or another saucepan, add 2 cups of water and 2 cups of caster sugar. Let it come to a boil, then transfer all the orange slices from the cold water to the saucepan.
- On a low flame, let the oranges simmer in the sugar water for approx 1 hour. After every 15 minutes, use a spoon to swirl the slices and pour the sugar water over them to ensure an even coating.
- Once the oranges look slightly translucent, remove them from the water and place them on a wire rack or a parchment-lined tray.
- Let them dry overnight, then bake in an oven at 100°C for 20 minutes on each side.
- Dust with caster sugar, then transfer to an airtight container.
